WONDERBAGS
Wonderbags are specially constructed insulated bags. Food is heated on a stove for ten minutes or so. Then the pot/pan is placed in the bag and the food cooks slowly during the night or day. Tests have shown that using a Wonderbag can reduce the cost of cooking by as much as 50%. They are wonderful for working women - just a short time on the stove and then into the bag to produce a hot, cooked meal when needed.
In August we received an order to make 1000 Wonderbags in two months! With many machinists looking for work it was too good an opportunity to miss. We set up two small units – one at Boyd van Coller in Riebeek Kasteel and one in the “mall” at Riebeek West - where ten machinists successfully completed the order on time.
Working together with http://www.naturalbalancesa.com in Johannesburg, who have a carbon trading relationship with JP Morgan Bank, we are determined to flood South Africa with Wonderbags as a major contribution to fighting poverty by saving electricity costs. We will be cutting carbon emissions at the same time.
We are now producing and selling the energy saving, carbon reducing Wonderbag from both units. Medium sized bags, that take a family size pot, are now on sale for R150 each. We want to get them to families who most need them and so we are hoping that people will buy them as gifts for their staff and for their friends. Each bag comes with a recipe book . We’re working on producing one in Afrikaans.
Janis Lane, artist and Deli Lane expert cook from Riebeek Kasteel is the project leader. She s will be at the market in Riebeek West in November and December and at the new market in Riebeek Kasteel on the square when it opens in early 2011. Enquiries call Janis Lane at 0224481 391 or 0725248400.

COOP - CYCLING OUT OF POVERTY
Last year, during the great storm which hit the area during the first week of November, forty young women from Cape Town rode their bikes for four days through the Swartland. They ended up, covered in mud, to meet their children and husbands at Goedgedacht. This amazing effort which, strangely enough was enjoyed by them all, raised R160 thousand which helped us buy the land for the POP 3 youth centre at Riebeek West and a large jungle gym for our pre-school.
This year the COOP ladies have planned 2 rides of 4 days – starting at the pre-school at Goedgedacht and ending at the Country Club at Elgin. This is taking place as I write this news letter. There are 40 cyclists on each ride. Each one had to raise at least R2000 sponsorship to participate and this money will go towards equipping the new POP youth centre at Riebeek West. A fabulous effort .
